What do I do all day at McMurdo?
Things have been a little slow lately, same old, same old. So I thought I'd try and explain more what my job is and include some pictures.
My first season (summer), I was a Dining Attendant. Thank goodness I was lucky and persistent enough to secure a winter position working in Supply. My new title is Materialsperson.
Being a Materialsperson includes helping Tradespeople (in my case plumbers, sheet metal workers and utility technicians) locate the materials they require to do their jobs. Some of the materials are stored in indoor, heated or unheated warehouses. Other materials are stored outside or inside milvans
Since winter is a little slower than summer, we were all assigned little projects--a few of mine were: reorganizing and re-labeling the escutcheons, belts and nozzles; relocating and organizing all of the overhead door parts and auditing all the nipples (used for plumbing :). It's a good job for someone like me that actually enjoys reorganizing and making things look nice again. A few weeks ago, I washed all of the pulleys..they look really pretty now.
I work with three other people and they're all great-Carmen is our Senior and then there's myself, Damian and Bruce. We all get along really well and I couldn't ask for a better crew to work with. We even have fun after work together (see pictures).
Ron (my husband), has a very similar job but he works with office supplies, things like toilet paper and cleaning products and chemicals like glycol.
My next entry should be after the first flight in, which I believe is on the 20th--lots of new people, mail and fresh food are on their way. We have to move into our smaller dorm tonight which is kind of a bummer but since it will only be for two more months it shouldn't be too bad.

a little snow storm
. Some of the material is heavy enough to require using a forklift or even a loader and I've learned how to operate both. We use a computer system to locate basically everything on station and overall it's a pretty accurate system-unless someone enters information incorrectly.Since winter is a little slower than summer, we were all assigned little projects--a few of mine were: reorganizing and re-labeling the escutcheons, belts and nozzles; relocating and organizing all of the overhead door parts and auditing all the nipples (used for plumbing :).
