Strangely familiar were the gondaliers in their black and white striped shirts and red neckchiefs, like so many tacky movies, but in life so achingly real.
We sat and ate pasta and focassia by a canal with water taxis chugging past and wetting our feet with their wash. Wandering thru the markets we spied Carnival costumed figures with gruesome masks cowering in shop windows and tables piled high with olive filled breads and bottles of grappa.
From Verona we did a day trip to Venice! Its everything great you´ve ever heard and more! It is high on our must go back to list!!!! Straight out of the train station it is unmistakabley Venice, canals, no cars just water taxis and gondolas and little streets winding thru archways and over bridges! It was very hot and we sat with the locals dipping our feet in the Grande Canal! The streets are a total maze and wind left and right, over this bridge and that, seemingly thru cracks in the wall and into some other amazing square or church yard! The throng of tourists around the Ponte di Rialto was suffocating but somehow totally relaxed in the heat and the piles of fresh fruit dripping with melting ice were a refreshing sight.
