We arrived in Omaru after a short drive from Dunedin and checked into the Top 10 campsite which was lovely.  It worked out cheaper to have a 2 bedroom chalet so we got to sleep in a big bed again!

We went to the information centre to find out the best place to see the penguins.  The Yellow Eyed Penguins are the rarest in the world.  They go out to sea in the morning and come back in the evening so we had to get to their beach between 3pm and 6pm to have a chance of seeing them.  We got there about 3pm and waited in the hidey hole provided, and waited, and waited, until aha!  They appeared!  We saw about 5 of them swim on to the beach, shake themselves off, waddle cautiously across the beach and go into their nests.  It was brilliant to see them.  We didn't want to leave but we'd booked to see the Blue Penguin Colony at 5:30pm to see them come in from their hard day's work.  These penguins are the smallest in the world.  The colony is supported by the centre but are still wild and free to come and go as they please.

We sat in the grandstand seats and listened to the commentary about the penguins.  All of a sudden we could see splashing in the sea and a dark shape came towards the beach - it was them!  About 40 penguins swam on to the beach and waddled in front of us to their nests.  They were absolutely amazing - soo cute!  One of them was curious about us and we had to stay really quiet.  It came really close and was a magical moment.

Oamaru is great.
