Yesterday morning we awoke in the Hayloft and went for a walk around Port Fairy. The weather was perfect for the day we had planned - lovely and sunny. We set off on our drive along the Great Ocean Road about 10:30am.
The drive to Lorne could have taken us about 2.5 hours but took us all day as we stopped loads of times along the way. There were viewpoints everywhere and we didn't want to miss anything! We saw rock formations such as 'London Bridge' and 'The 12 Apostles'. They are pretty amazing and the sea is a beautiful blue green colour with waves crashing against the coast. The driving was great. We shared it so that we could both look at the views!
We took a couple of detours - we planned to see the Otway Fly - a rainforest canopy walk. By the time we got there via a really long windy road it was 3pm (it closed at 4pm) and it cost $20 to get in so we gave it a miss. The road back was marked on the map as unmade track and we were a bit worried about driving along it. It turned out fine but took ages to get back down the hill to the main road. We were also running out of petrol at this point so it was pretty unnerving being in what seemed like the middle of nowhere with no end in sight!
Luckily we survived to tell the tale and made it to Lorne about 5pm. The YHA Hostel in Lorne was another good find. It was a series of wooden huts - about 4 rooms grouped together in one big hut with 2 bathrooms in each one. It also had a big kitchen/common room. It's in the middle of a wooded area and we woke up to cockatoos and parrots chirping away - it was lovely.
After making our own brekkie (finally decided to buy our own stuff - it's so much cheaper), we drove to Erskine Falls which were looking a bit sad due to the water shortage, and then drove back to Melbourne via Airy's Inlet, Bells Beach where Point Break was filmed, and Torquay - surfer's paradise. Unfortunately it rained most of the day so we didn't see many surfers.
The Great Ocean Road was fab and I'd recommend it to anyone - especially driving yourselves as there are so many places to stop off. It was really nice to get away from the city for a few days.
Will update before we leave Melbourne for Sydney in a few days..

Hiya
Hiya both, sounds like an amazing trip so far, I spoke to your Mum the other day, who said she was off on her travels the next day and meeting up with u....told her she should do a Travel Blog ;-) Think she was worried about getting on the wrong plane and ending up in Iceland!!! Told her to wear an electronic tag so we can keep an eye on her!
All is good here, weather is rubbish, rain, rain and more rain, send us some sun, pleeeeease!
Safe travels. Loads of Love, Sarah xx
