Where I stayed
An early start and two flights later we´re finally really on our way. New York, Big Apple, the City that Never Sleeps.
First impressions - it´s big, the people look like New Yorkers, lots of lights, doesn´t feel like New York for some reason. Oh, and it´s cold!
Wendys for dinner, Time Square Bagels for breakfast, Dim Sims for lunch and round it all off with TGI Fridays for dinner.
Did the Downtown Loop on Gray Line´s bus tour. Great way to see the sights without freezing. 4 different guides, of varying quality. The best by far was the young guy that had lived there all his life, great tips on restaurants, things to see and do
We stayed at the Best Western President, just round the corner from Times Square (and up the road from the Hersheys Shop and the M&Ms shop - yes they really have a shop for M&Ms, where you can amongst other things buy M&Ms buy the pound - all 22 different colours of them. Americans eh!). Great location , quiet room (on the 14th floor) and right in the middle of things.
Got to see all the sights - Times Square, Macy´s, Empire State, Ground Zero (big hole in the ground), the Statue of Liberty (from very far away), UN building, Central Park etc... Didn´t go in anyplace except Macy´s - weather wasn´t worth $18 + queue to go up in either the Empire State or Rockefeller.
Hanging around Times Square at 7am is interesting. We were just standing there eating our bagels, looking through the window at Good Morning America being filmed (Times Square Studio) and this girl comes out and asks if we want to go in and watch. Only in New York. If we´d had more time (and didn´t have a face full of bagel) we would´ve gone in, maybe next time. Still, they did a live spot on the corner there in Times Square, so we did the mandatory walk by, and now we´ve been on national TV in the states
Really liked New York, without really knowing why. It has a certain charm (plus Manhattan is an island, which is a plus right from the start). Wouldn´t want to live there - too cold and blowy in the winter, and from what I´ve heard way to hot and muggy in the summer. But a great place to visit. We´ll be back some time.
Taxi out to the airport, and in true never sleeping stlye, we just stepped out the front door at 245 in the morning and flagged one done. Only in New York.
Next stop San Jose, Costa Rica...
