This trip is based purely on nostalgia. Do you remember the Prego roll, Perri Perri Chicken and grilled calamari from the home land? Well, we are going to the land of origin, to see if these great dishes taste as delicious in Portugal, as they tasted in the Portuguese restaurants in South Africa.
This will be our first trip that we plan to make extensive use of public transportation in Portugal, no not the planes, trains, and automobiles; but the buses, vernaculars, trams and the crazy taxi drivers. This called for a different packing strategy. Johan did not waste a moment and did some research on how to "pack light."
I had my doubts, how on earth can you travel for 3 weeks with just carry on? Well, you start by carefully selecting shirts, and blouses, socks and underwear that will be light to carry, reasonably warm, yet easy to dry in a hotel room
Easier said than done. In preparation for the trip I washed many a thing at home with my hand, even though I have an automated washing machine and great tumble drier.
At least I did not have to walk down to the river with the laundry on my head, I did not have to smash it across the rocks to get the dirt out, and I did not have to lay it on the grass in the sun to bleach. I took the second best option, keeping in mind that the washing machine is top choice, I "prep washed" at home. After washing, ,I placed the clothes in a towel and Johan and I tried to wrung all the extra moisture out, by each pulling a side of the towel like two crazed bull terriers. Next the laundry got a special place over the bath tub, for a peaceful night. If by the next morning it was not dry, it went back into the closet as not suitable for travel. The end result of what we packed is below:
4 Jeans, 2 pairs of shoes, 6 pairs of socks, 6 pairs of underwear (I hope he is not going for the wear the same underwear 4 times - to the front, to the back and reverse this with inside out) 1 sweater, 1 jacket, 1 beanie, scarf, gloves (it is already snowing in Switzerland), toiletries and a whole bag of medicine
4 pairs of Jeans, 7 blouses, 2 sweaters, 1 rain jacket, unmentionables (enough that I will not go for the inside out strategy mentioned above), sleepwear, a computer, a kindle, a Nixon D90 camera and 2 lenses. A rain jacket and blanket. Batteries and such small items were packed in a small bag.
No news on the food yet, that will come!!
