Where I stayed
After booking a Grayline tour to the Blue Mountains on Friday, and buying our
Hop On Hop Off Sydney bus tour for Thursday, and getting our Mymulti1 combo
bus-train-ferry pass, we walked around Darling Harbour a bit. This area was redeveloped in the mid 80’s and
more since then. As we’ve seen before,
it’s reclaimed industrial warehouse land.
We then got on the H.O.H.O bus and rode it until lunch at the Sydney
Fish Market. They sell platters of fried
seafood and we sat outside on the wharf
Finally tried the Whitebait that we heard so much about in New
Zealand. We weren’t that impressed with
the small 2” fish. Oh well. From there we got back on the bus and
finished the tour. Sydney was the first
place the English settled in Australia…as a penal colony. Over time, there were 160,000 convicts sent
here. Many of them apparently became the
first explorers of Australia.
We finished our tour at The Rock, which was where the first settlers
lived. It’s at the south end of the
famous Sydney Harbour Bridge. We walked
most of the way over the bridge and took some pictures of the Opera house. After that we stopped at the Australian Hotel
for wifi and a drink. From there we walked
to the Customs House at Circle Quay for their wifi. The Customs House in now a library,
restaurant, and office building. Circle
Quay is the main transportation hub for the various water taxi’s ferries, river
cats, ocean liners, trains, and buses. We caught a bus back to our neighborhood
and found a tapas restaurant that was pretty good.
