I woke up early today and went for a walk on the wharf while Karen slept in. Wellington turned out to be a nice surprise. They were having a half marathon and 7k walk and run right outside our CV today.  As I walked around I kept finding fun historical references to their rebuilding of the sheds on the wharf, and other redevelopment projects that transformed this former industrial area into a very pleasant urban setting with parks, sculptures, parking under the parks, and restaurants.  The Greenpeace Rainbow Warrior ship is docked here and set sail while we were walking to the Sunday farmers market.  Also on the way we came across about 10 old shipping containers on the wharf by Te Papa and the market.  They were all fixed up and available to local performing artists who were doing interactive performances with people walking by.  Very cool! After the market we had some Hungarian funnel cakes and coffee, and then went to the National Museum they call Te Papa.  Te Papa means container of treasures in Maori.  Loosely translated they told us.  In 2 hrs we were able to get a pretty good feel for all things NZ including their rich Maori history and influence.  It's a fascinating story that includes Polynesia influences and European...and convicts.  The Maori story is one that in some respects parallels the Native American story. In other words, not such a good story until the NZ government apologized to the Maori people, but even then the discrimination apparently continues.

Left Wellington and headed north to Wanganui.  About a 3 hr drive thru small towns on the west coast of the North Island.  Not a lot of photo ops here. Cooked our lamb chops, corn, and red potatoes from the market this morning.
