After going to the campervan dump station next to the fire station, we headed to the “tramp head” of the Keppler Track for a 12k round trip jaunt. The hike was pretty level thru varied types of red beech trees, ferns of different varieties, and multi-colored moss
We ended up at a really cool beach on Lake Manapouri that had a hut that had 6 bunk beds and a fireplace. The beach was white sand a limestone rocks with lots of driftwood. We basically hiked thru old swampland and bogs to get there. Came across many sinkholes along the way.
After the hike we gassed up the “love nest” and headed back to Queenstown. Karen slept most of the 2+ hrs. Waved at Stu’s Fishing Shop on the way thru Athol. The drive along Lake Wakapitu was just as stunning. Went to dinner at The Fishbone in Queenstown. Karen had monkfish and I had a seafood curry with green lipped mussels, calamari, sea clams, scallops, and steamed Chinese lotus plant. Stocked up at the grocery store and hiked back to our holiday park.
In the photos I've attached you'll see a sneak preview of the next leg of our trip. I got ahead of myself. Oops!
The river water is really cold, as are most of the lakes.
I did see lots of mushrooms on the Keppler Track trail but could only identfy a poisonous one.
