Flew 3 hrs to Christchurch arriving about
midnight.  Our hotel was right next door
to the airport.  And our Maui RV rental
place was right next door to the hotel.
We got everything arranged and left about noon for downtown Christchurch
just to do a drive-by.  Two years ago
they had a big earthquake.  I didn’t
realize how devastating and tragic it was.
Many churches and commercial building were compromised or destroyed in
their central business district.  Blocks
of buildings 5 stories tall had to be removed
Many, maybe dozens are still here but sitting empty.  The city created a Christchurch Restart
project and arranged with at least one, and probably more, major property
owners downtown to bring in shipping containers and use them for new stores and
restaurants.  Very creative to say the
least.  We talked to one shopowner  who was displaced by the quake.  She said business has been even better but
come March they will remove the containers and she’ll have to relocate
again.  We actually saw them finally
tearing down a building that was probably 10 stories tall.

While in Christchurch it started to rain really hard for the
first real rain of our trip.  After
stocking up at a grocery store we left town and headed south to Lake
Tekapo.  It was about a 3 hrs., mostly in
wind and rain.  We travelled thru rolling
hills and farmland.  Very scenic.  We’ve seen sheep in many places along the way
so far, but today was when we started to see a lot of them.  More sheep than cows but it was close.  They make a lot of cheese in NZ.
