Australia Day. Went
to the People’s March Parade. The parade participants represented their
culture, heritage, and special interest groups.
Then it was on to Kings Domain Gardens, a huge park just
across the Yarra river. They had 450
veteran, vintage, and classic vehicles.
Very cool. We sat next to a
couple visiting from Sydney the night before and they told us about the
Government House where the Victoria State Governor lives
on Australia Day. So when we were
walking thru the park we happened across a long que (line) and decided to wait
in it to go thru the mansion. 2 ½ hrs
later we went thru the mansion in 30 minutes.
While standing in line we were treated to an air show by the
Royal Australian Air Force elite acrobatic team.
Next we headed off to Melbourne Park where the Australian
Open takes place. We needed a break from
standing and walking. We spent the next
few hours in the beer garden where you can watch tennis matches on many big
screens. This was the day for the women’s
final between Viktoria Azarenka
(Belarus) and Li Na (China), which we watched. Another perk
for the day was the Aussie Day fireworks show.
So part way thru the 3rd set they stopped the match for 15
minutes. And we could just see the
fireworks from our seats. Really lucky,
as was the whole day since we only planned on the tennis. If you've seen weather reports for Australia, everything bad, record flooding is happening north of Brisbane but they will get it today. 6 cyclones expected to hit Brisbane.
