Welcome to Cusco!
I'd
forgetten about the children who sell ciggies, finger puppets,
postcards and paintings. Last time I was in Cusco our hotel was away
from the main square, this time it's 2 minutes away so it's impossible
to go anywhere without Tom Cruise, George Washington, Bill Gates, Just
William, King Arthur and Britney Spears trying to sell us something
from first thing in the morning to last thing at night.
They
are very bright kids
told King Arthur I was from Japan. So he asked me the capital, the
currency, the names of the king and the prime minister and when I
couldn't answer the last two, he told me. Trouble is I've forgotten
again already, so I'll have to go back to being English.
We're
trying to be democratic about it and buy something from each child in
turn - baby and mummy turtle finger puppet anyone? I´m afraid postage
from Peru is extortionate so you probably wont see the postcards.
Jon
is doing the Inca Trail next Monday to Thursday, but guess who's making
the lists of stuff he needs to buy/hire/take with him (and seeing that
he gets them). We had a day of torrential rain so the only thing for
it was to go shopping at the artesans' market. He now has the most
beautiful alpaca jacket to replace the stinky ski jacket he lost in
Arequipa. I bet it doesn't return from the Inca Trail!
