Where I stayed
Hotel La Palma

Flag of El Salvador  ,
Tuesday, February 17, 2009

I´m staying in a rustic cabana on the edge of a small town in the north
of El Salvador and today there´s an international conference happening
down the path!!  Delegates keep making themselves comfortable in my
hammock!  I´ve worked out from the vehicles parked that they are
national park officials from Honduras and Guatemala as well as locals.
If I´d realised my peace was going to be disturbed to this extent I´d
have moved on.
La Palma is an artists´ community up in the hills,
bisected by the main road to Honduras and shaken by lorries all day.
It needs a bypass.  Most of the houses have beautiful artwork on the
outside walls, but I take my life in my hands trying to photograph
them.  The highest point in El Salvador is just down the road and I was
going to hike to its 2870m summit today but I´m too tired.  I´m still
waking up at 5am even without the wretched church bells, there are
still roosters.
El
Salvador is surprisingly lush, with loads of different shades of
trees.  I don´t really know what I was expecting, some sort of blasted
heath I guess.
I´d hoped I´d left the chicken buses behind in
Nicaragua, but the one I was on yesterday to La Palma had the least
legroom of any vehicle in existence.
