Yesterday I went to the weekly market in Silvia where the Guambiano
Indians come to sell their produce,  Very ethnic and picturesque, but I
wasn't tempted to buy anthing, not even the potatoes in my favourite
shade of shocking pink! Nor the hairy piglets.

The Guambiano
womenfolk wear a full black skirt and a blue woven shawl, both trimmed
in shocking pink (potato dye?), and they have a marked preference for
tan CAT boots.  The menfolk wear a blue wraparound skirt and black
poncho, also trimmed in pink, and black lace up shoes.  All the adults
wear a brownish bowler hat with the crown dented - the children wear a
pancake like straw hat but otherwise are dressed the same.

The
Lying Planet says they are the most traditional Indian group in the
country and the market the most colourful.  Only in black, blue and
pink I say!  It was a nice day out though - the road was paved the
whole way!!  More gobsmacking scenery on the way too.

I'd
intended to go to the local volcano today but was too lazy to get up in
time for the bus.  Thankfully.  The afternoon thunderstorm started at
noon and visibility in the hills is terrible - I know this because I
can't see them out of the window - so I'm happy to be warm and dry
indoors.

I'm finally dragging myself away from Popayan on Friday
- it's such a great hostel and such a lot of nice people here that I
don't want to leave before my birthday.  Pasto next, then into Ecuador
on Monday or Tuesday.  Hopefully I'll get a good deal on a Galapagos
trip in Quito, but I'm actually more excited about the Equator Park -
never crossed the equator on dry land before - which is theme park
dedicated to all those things you can only do on the equator.  When
I've been I 'll tell you what they are.
