Today we hiked up Mount Madison on the Daniel Webster Scout Trail. We looked at the map before which stated the trail was a 3.5 hike of moderate difficulty up the mountian. How hard could that be right? Well Tim and I really didn't know what we were getting ourselves into. 10 minutes into our hike we came across a nice little bear cub running in the bushes. Cute and all but we did not stick around to watch, god only knows where mama bear was! I can't say I was feeling all that wonderful knowing we were about to embark on a hike up a mountian now that it was confirmed there were bears around!

The first quarter of the trail was pretty easy, but from there on out it got pretty difficult climbing up rocks, tree roots and over muddy streams. The last quarter of the hike was straight up on the side of the mountian on boulders! We left later thinking it wouldn't take us that long to get to the top, but once we realized how long it actually took, we weren't too keen about staying at the top that long. The views were incredible! I was so thankful that we had another day of wonderful weather without any clouds in the sky. It was hard enough climbing up steep rocks with a slight breeze, I can't imagine doing it with anything stronger blowing us around. We thought the hike up was tough (not unbearable, but tough enough) but going back down was even tougher! I will never climb a mountian in a pair of worn out Nike running shoes EVER again. We plan on doing another trail in a days when we recover from the soreness from this hike. I will definitely be getting myself a nice pair of hiking boots before then!
