After 1.5 hour bus trip from Malacca arrived in Kuala Lumpur (KL). Dropped right in the middle of the tourist area bustling with hotels, bars, restaurants and hostels. Most of the cheap places were full and eventually found a very basic place. Not the cleanest place I've stayed but not much choice. Lots of dodgy looking people around but that might just be they way Malaysians look. Unlike India and Sri Lanka nobody greets you. They was a huge afternoon thunderstorm and once it held up went for a walk to the now ubiquitous Chinatown. The streets were awash with water but once again great food stalls and the same cheap t shirts, watches, cameras and souvenirs. Walkways are jammed with shops and people and all rather hectic and a bit chaotic.
The problem with a lot of the cheap places tourists stay in, is that they are very basic
Caught a bus to Batu Caves which is about 10 km outside KL. These are huge caves over a 100 meters high and are accessed by 277 steps. It is now a Hindu Temple and shrine and once a year there is a big festival and over one million devotees turn up. This is where they do their penance by sticking needles through their skin and hooks in their backs and drag things around. Lots of monkeys around which hassle anybody who looks as if they have got food and drinks. The caves were not as impressive as I expected but still interesting. Just a huge big cavern and some brightly painted Hindi statures and gods.
On the way back hopped off the bus and wandered around Medaka Square area of KL. Lots of different architecture as well as the worlds tallest flagpole (100 meters). The things I have seen!!!! Walked about 2 km to see the Petronas Towers
I have spent a while walking through KL and am not that impressed. Just another big modern city with too many cars and people. I also don't like where I am staying so I think it is time to move on. The place smells, there is cat shit in the corridors and some very strange people staying there.
Woke up and was just not in the mood to find buses and not sure even where I want to go. Checked out of flea pit and am almost sure there were bed bugs as woke up itching. Found a really brilliant Hostel near by and for the same price it is super clean, friendly staff, free breakfast, WIFI and lounge where I can chat to other travelers. Spent the day having walkabout and some good food and booked ticket to Penang for tomorrow. Not sad about leaving KL at all
