Daulatabd Fort

Booked into the Hotel Chhaya which is quite pleasant but have a strange suspicion about the propritor. Looks like he wants to fleece me for every rupee i have and then get my family to send him more.

after a quick shower managed to organise car and driver for the day. Drove to Ellora Caves which was about 30 minutes drive. These are ancient temples cut into and out of the cliff. Some date back from the 2BC and about 7AD.  Too magnificant to describe. They are massive and intricatly carved and are a mix of Buddism, Hindu and Jainism. Stunning. Photos to follow.

From here i visited Daulatabad Fort. The best fort i have ever explored. It was built in about the 12 centuary and over time the defense system was moderfied. The main palace is situated on top of a steep hill has sheer cliff walls, moats, drawbridge, secret passages, dead end, dark passages with traos etc. Had a whole lot of fun but was completly exhausted by the time I got to the top.
On the way my driver insisted that we stop at the local silk weavers. No doubt he would be paid a commission. Very interesting as this place still hand weaves silk. the raw material comes from Bangalore and is woven on wooden looms. each sari is 6 meters long with 4000 threads and then each pattern is threaded by hand. It can take up to 8 weeks to make one sari but then these become family heirlooms and passed down and only used for very special occasions.

Ater an exhausting but brilliant day retired to the hotel and had the joys of Ganesh festival blaring till midnight. My hotel is in a warren of lanes and it is very easy to get lost when walking. One thing in Mumbai most of the signs were in hindi and english but here everything is in sanskrit style writing I  dont have a clue. its fun.

Dinner at a local restaurant where all the food is cooked on a 2 burner flat top, the washing up done under the stairs in buckets of water and excellent food. Took a walk around and saw the best Ganesha display so far. This one had bigger than life size puppets of Ganesh blowing clouds of smoke out of his trunk while his mechanical arm stabbed some one to death and other 'devil' types waved spears etc. all to load chanting prayers
