Was supposed to take a bus trip around Mumbai. Got up early to have a walk around but got totally lost and spent most of the morning walking through some military bases. No one seemed bothered even though there armed soldiers everywhere and signs saying "guards armed and can shoot trespassers" I thought is was a through road towards the seafront but after walking for over an hour found myself at a dead end and had to walk all the way back. I still couldn't find the bus stop! Popped into Leopold Cafe ( made notorious in Shantaram) not at all as I expected but had a awesome chicken tandoori. Expensive by Mumbai standards but seems to be the trendy tourist hangout. Siesta time after lunch and the went to find the bus stop for tomorrow. No luck. Had really great dinner of Chicken Kohlpuri and roti.. Lovely rich spicy tomato based dish. Including tea (chai) and water 180 r about 25 rand.

Mumbai has a population of about 14 million people and I think 13 million were outside my window last night celebrating Ganeshi festival. Drums, singing, fireworks what a party.

Mumbai has its own smell - Think of when your your trash has been sweating for a week on the pavement and you get that rank smell of bin juice. Mix this with a generous portion of sewerage, a hint of Indian cooking aromas and a dash of incense and this is Mumbai. Funny thing is that I don't find it offensive. Add in the constant cacophony of hooters, whistles, blaring bangra music and cawing crows. Then blend in the brilliant colours of Saris, brightly coloured vehicles and street stalls selling all the rainbow colours of fabrics, fruit, and mix it in with shiny reflective jewelry and silver. And this is Mumbai - a sensory overload
