I always have a love/hate relationship with these pre-departure periods. I'm excited to be heading away to familiar and new places, where I'll udoubtedly learn and experience new things, catch up with friends and experience a slice of the world that I can't at home. However, like a child who can't sleep on Christmas Eve out of excitement for his arrival, this pre-departure days drag seemingly endlessly. All this comes to a head on the afternoon of departure, at work, when it becomes a struggle to maintain focus. The boring reality that I would probably end up just staring at the clock if I weren't at work driving me to engage and occupy myself with work to make the time go faster
This time around I'm able to share my excitement at home with my parents as they're also heading overseas soon. In what is a turn of the tables from just a few years ago they're leaving a few days before and coming back a few days after. Those b*stards! Their travel does however have home implications as my aunt, uncle and family will also be away so poor old Thistle gets to re-acquaint herself with the vet for a couple of weeks with nobody here to look after her. As you may expect, this confluence of travel dates is no coincidence - we will be forming a sizeable family group for part of the trip, and that is something new for me.
Anyway, enough ramblings, you'll find out what happens as the trip goes on so there's not too much point in providing much detail now, suffice to say that I'm determined to actually finish this blog... but that may change. Ha ha.
The first update will most likely be sometime on the 8th, at my first destination. See you then!
