It was Sunday early morning when we headed off [shuttled by te Selle family] for Dusseldorf international airport. It was a miserable morning with ice/snow conditions on our way. After an hour and a half we arrived safely at the airport and after a short goodbye, we managed to find the correct drop-of location for our – super light – backpacks. Today, we are flying with Etihad, the airline of United Arab Emirates. We would have a stopover in Abu Dhabi and from there it would be a direct flight to Beijing Airport. The flights were great and we must admit that – although it is not Emirates – is has a great service! The first part we flew via the Black Sea, over Turkey, Iraq, Kuwait and the Gulf Region to our destination Abu Dhabi. There we changed planes and an hour and a half later we were on our way over Dubai, Pakistan, Gobi Desert to our final destination Beijing
We had a small delay of 45 minutes but who cares, we are in Beijing. Quickly through border control and on our way to pick up our luggage! Hurray! It was there! At the airport we changed some dollars into the Chinese Yuan. Easy so far! Than our next challenge: how do we get to our hostel in the city center? Well luckily for us, they do have a good "how to get here" description. So we took the Airport Express train to the station Dongzhimen. Here we change to the subway system. The subway system is the way to get around in Beijing. It is highly efficient and easy to use. The only thing is the names and characters; these will be the challenge to master during the next few days. After a few more stops and a change of lines we arrived at our final subway destination Zangzizhonglu. We made it! There it is, the Peking Yard hostel. It is a nice and cozy hostel in the Hutong (ancient lanes in the bustling city) with a nice public area, WIFI and a pool table. First we decided to sleep for a few hours and then go the Lama Temple, the most renowned Tibetan Buddhist Temple outside the historic land of Tibet
But for that story you will have to wait a little longer for our next entry!
