New Zealand, Auckland, our next destination! We had been to Auckland Airport before but as a stopover on our way to Brisbane. As time has passed and it is the end of October, the weather has changed a lot and it is starting to get summer now. A much better season to explore the beautiful country of New Zealand.

We landed at Auckland airport around 5.30 PM but is was not before 6.30 pm that we left the building as our tent was checked by border control if it contains any dangerous seeds. In the meantime, we met the lovely cousin of Anke – Jörgen's sister in Law – Inge Way, who lives in Auckland together with her man John and their kids Benjamin, Alexander and Marcus. What a beautiful family! We would stay at the Way’s household for the next few days from where we could explore Auckland city and their nearby surroundings.

The Way family, what a warm and welcoming place for visitors! It turned out that they do not only have a good mood and humor but as well love the Settlers of Catan – City and Knights. What a nice coincident, we used to play that back home a lot! Also their kids loved playing, especially in the garden on the trampoline. Of course Jörgen had to play to on the trampoline with them as well! Then they had this game called Angry Birds, not the one on the computer, no the real one! A household with a lot of energy and lots of fun too!! We got our own beautiful room with a good bed! Thank you for that! Oh, before we forget o thank our hosts; sorry for the late nights and beating you most of the times with settlers… or was that hospitable?!?

Inge, John nd the kids are living around Mount Roskill, a beautiful spot to see sunset and the skyline of Auckland. Shops and bus connections are available on walking distance to, so we had everything we needed. We explored Auckland by taking the bus to the city center. Auckland is a young, beautiful city, especially near the harbor area and around Civic Avenue. It is built around – and partly up the slopes of – ancient volcanos and therefore it is really hilly and sometimes steep avenues. But as said, an amazing city!

Then, there was Guy Fawkes day – which means bonfires and fireworks (named after an English man who tried to blow up a palace or so… btw he did not succeeded)! Very, very exciting and not only for the kids! Friends came over to celebrate this day and. Before having dinner first the fireworks for their kids, Jörgen and parents. Then time for wraps and delicious desserts including a Dutch specialty made by Maria, the Appelflap!

Times passes quickly and before we knew it, it was time to pick-up our Daihatsu Sirion. With this vehicle and our camping equipment, we would explore the Northern Island the next – few – days. But before heading off, first some more games and the Museum of Auckland with our private guide John. The Museum of Auckland is more then only a war-memorial to those people of Auckland, who lost their lives during the First World War. It provides also information in the battles from the passed where people of New Zealand were involved as well as information about New Zealand’s nature and history (Maori and European settlement). After an informative afternoon, we just had enough time to visit Mount Eden – also an ancient volcano – too. During Maori times, this Mountain – we would call it a hill – was important from a strategic military point of view. Interesting, but also the beautiful view again over Auckland made it really well worth visiting this place!

After a warm and welcoming stay at the Way family time has come to say goodbye for now. We are starting our road trip through New Zealand by leaving Auckland over the Auckland Bridge into the north! We are on our way to find some of New Zealand’s biggest giants, and that are not humans!
