When we finally arrived in Jishou, we immediately got bad vibes from the city, and wanted to leave. We walked for a bit and stumbled upon the bus station. Next stop: Fenghuang. About an hour later we arrived to the bus station, where once again we were bombarded with locals asking us if we needed a ride into the Old Town of Fenghuang. We hopped in one of the cars and sped off. The driver talked to us in Chinese the entire time, as if we knew what she was saying. We laughed and made jokes back to her as if we understood everything.

She dropped us off right outside the gate to the Old Town, and we scampered away to avoid her Chinese rants. Fenghuang is a beautiful old ancient town which is built around one main river. We strolled around for a bit until we found a place to stay. Our room was on the third floor of an old building, directly overlooking the river and the buildings opposite of us. Not bad for $20. With some daylight left to kill, we aimlessly wandered the streets of Fenghuang. The locals were very friendly, and we liked the relaxed atmosphere of the town. Chris was able to take many portraits of the locals. After a couple hours of meandering the streets, alleys, and river, we headed back to our room to enjoy my warm, train beers. Once it began to get dark, we found that Fenghuang was quite the bar scene. From our room we could see bars opening up, turning on their flashing neon lights, and blasting their karaoke. How could such a beautiful, ancient town, turn into this club scene at night? We laughed, had a few more beers, and decided to check out the night life.

We walked the “bar strip” along the river, and found one we thought looked enjoyable. When we entered the bar, we were immediate celebrities. All of the Chinese people (mostly our age), were enthralled with us and insisted we take pictures with them. They usually made me sit down in the pictures; most of them didn‘t even come up to my shoulders. We hung out with a group of them for awhile, having little idea of what they were saying to us. One of the guys kept yelling his phone number at Chris; I guess he wanted to party with us again later. After a few beers, lots of pictures, many words, but little understanding, we headed back to the room to go to sleep.
