Today I travelled to Lago Atitlan, a two and a half hour drive from Antigua. It is meant to be "the" beauty spot
in Guatemala and indeed it is a truly beautiful lake surrounded by volcanic mountains and small villages. However for me it was a sad example of mismanaged tourism where the economic needs of poor communities have turned the entry points to the villages(especially the biggest-Panajachel) into ugly tacky second rate handicraft "Kasbahs".
Thousands of people have flocked to the shores of the lake to try to make a living and this is now threatening the whole ecostructure.
I did enjoy the boat trips to the different villages and seeing Maximon at Santiago Atitlan.(See the photo)
