Deciding that the only way to see in the end of the twentieth century was to do it in Australia, so we set off to Bangkok. After leaving London, where it was cold, we landed in Bangkok. Humid as all hell. Complete contrast. What an experience. Jumped on the bus and ended up on Koh Sahn Road. Bangkok's home for backpackers. Street food everywhere. Pad Thai for 15 Baht. Cheap as. Only way to eat was on the street. Buddhist Wats everywhere. We walked down to the Palace and did a tour. It was huge. Saw the Emerald Buddha which is meant to be the most special item in the palace. It was green and emerald and surrounded by Thai people !!!!!. As it was so hot, when we got to the section where the crown jewels were, there was air-conditioning here. Managed to cool ourselves down slightly. We started to walk over to see Wat Po, the huge reclining Buddha. As we were nearing the Wat, Tuk Tuk drivers jumped out and tried to get us to go for a ride. They were telling us that the Wat was closed on this day for westerners. They try this on everyone, even though there is a sign stating that it is open everyday of the year !!!!! Realising that this was a scam, we said no and went to visit the Wat. This Buddha was huge, gold and reclining. It was actually pretty impressive. We looked at a few other Wats, but after the palace and Wat Po, it was hard to feel amazed by them. We were heading to Viet Nam so a couple of days was enough on our first foray into Thailand
