Back in April 2010, I set out walking from Circular Quay in Sydney to Newcastle, a distance of 240ish Ks. Not far really, but having walked two days to Berowra, I was absolutely fucked !!! Now don't get me wrong, I've done loads of walking in my time, but those two days were the hardest I had ever encountered, and as I am back in Australia, the only thing to do was set out and start walking.

The Great North Walk, Day 3 - GPS Link

Leaving my Mum's at Thornleigh, I caught a couple of trains and arrived at Berowra. My memories of this place was limping out and not being able to walk for three days !!!

Off the train, across the Pacific Highway and down into the bush I went. I didn't remember much, only the stairs at the start !!! The track was nice and wide for the first couple of Ks, but once I hit single track, I went up and down to Berowra Waters. I was the only one out there, which was very nice.

Once past there, the track climbed up a steep ridge !!! I met a lady as I was going down the otherside and she told me that I had another two ridges to climb before Cowan and I would make Brooklyn easily !!! Trust me, I am very gullible and I believed her !!!

A few hours past by before I climbed the last ridge and saw the signs for Cowan station, I was pretty happy, and I knew there was only 11Ks to go, so I trekked on.

As I walked down the track towards Jerusalem Bay, I kind of knew that it was a mistake as I started to feel some twinges in my knees, but as I was going down, it was to late to turn back. On the plus side, the views were great. At the bay, I knew I had to go up, and the climb was long and slow, and it seemed like an eternity before I made it to the top.

Once there, the track opened up and I was rewarded with some memorable wildlife. OI came across a pair of red tailed black cockatoos. I had never seen these before and it made me think, what the fuck am I living in the UK !!!

The last 5Ks was all downhill, and the closer I got to Brooklyn, the steeper it got, in fact, it was so steep, my knees couldn't cope and I ended walking the last twentyish minutes backwards !!!

Once down in Brooklyn, I checked out the times for the postal ferry to Patonga and knew that I would not make the next stage, so all I could do is catch a train home and dream of the future !!!
