First stop was the Cathedral, a quick photo was taken before I moved off along the pavements that I walked in April. The Ks went by prettty quickly, and I was hoping to have breakfast at a cafe that would give me a sello, but as it was before 09:00, it was closed, so I pushed on, hit a hill and then some technical downhill, which was fun, however, what goes down, only goes back up again, so for the first time, and not the last time, I got off and pushed !!!
An hour later, I had reached Grado, so I stopped for brunch, and then hit the road again, knowing that there was another huge hill was coming up, so I pushed, and then rode, and then pushed. I do remember this part of the walk, because it just pissed down on us, and today with the sun out, it was far nicer !!!
Down into Cornellana, and straight on through to Salas, I decided to have a stop as I had done 50Ks pretty quickly, but I knew I had a big hill to go up, so I tried to preserve my energy, but it didn't help, as I had to push and push up the hill. Up the top it zig zagged, which was tough, but I did manage to get going again, only to get off and push up to the top of La Espina.
At the top, I rode up to Bodenaya, grabbed a sello at the albergue and the guys there said, across the top of the last 10Ks, it is incredibly muddy, we advise you not to ride. Not listening to this, I set out across the road and on top of the ridge. Now back in April, this had been pretty muddy, but now it was even worse !!! I battled against it, sliding all ways, and just managing to stay on, and 6Ks in, the track took me back onto the road.
Not far down the road, I was meant to go back onto the track, but I decided to stay on the road, and when you are pedalling between 50-60Kp/h, you get there pretty quickly !!! Upon seeing the Tineo road sign, I burst into tears !!! I was spent and I had given my all and survived my first day !!! I parked the bike, found my bed from the first time there, showered, and then died for a couple of hours !!!
After I awoke, I spoke to some people in the albergue in a mixture of Spanish/French/English and realised one thing, you miss the cameraderie when you cycle. It was good hearing their stories but it made me jealous as I could not live their life. Another cyclist did turn up, but he only spoke Portuguese, so I left him to it whilst I ate.
It was a fun/hard first day, but it will only get harder as tomorrow, I am climbing the highest mountain of three, and realistically, am not looking forward to the pushing !!!
