Day 5

Start - Finish

Walton - Carlisle

Distance - 16 Kilometres

As we walked out of Walton, it was a little sad that we were not going to see anymore wall, but there was still a walk to be had, so we pushed on into the farms. We walked into one and could see some bags hanging out of a fat sheep, and then a farmer came riding up on his quad bike, stopped, ran over to a gulley and pulled out what looked like two dead lambs. As we got closer, we could see that these two lambs were breathing and their mother was cleaning them. We started speaking to the farmer and he told us that 80% of sheep are born naturally and that these two would take about half an hour before they could stand up. When I asked about the bags on the other one, he said that they were water bags and he was now going to help it have them. He raced over, stuck on a glove up to his elbow, dived in and within ten minutes, he had ripped out two lambs !!! Whilst he did that, we watched the two lambs trying to stand up. Would they have a real life or would they end up as roast lamb we would never know !!!

We carried on walking, and after more fields, another farmer came over and told us to be wary as he had just let his cows out for the first time since winter. They were jumping around and enjoying themselves. Once they had calmed down, we started walking, and then they saw us. They started moving towards us, they got closer and closer, they looked evil !!! Then they grew bored of stalking us, and they wandered off !!!

Carlisle became closer, and the walk became more boring, and not long after, we were in a park which meant we were in Carlisle. We found our B&B, had a rest and then walked the town. There is a castle that once held Mary Queen of Scots. It was quite interesting. There were also two round towers that Henry the Eighth had built. As we walked, Lucy and I spoke about the walk. Now if you are a purist, you go all the way to Bowness, but we had decided a long time ago, that we would end our walk here, and everyone who we have met who have done the walk say that the last stage is boring. Realistically, we both felt like we should have gone on, but our time had run out. Oh well !!!

And Finally

What a walk. The views, the scenery, the food and the people were all great. I loved it, even if my knees didn't !!! So if you are ever up North, visit the wall, you won't regret it.
