Wallsend - Heddon-On-The-Wall
Distance - 25 Kilometres
Leaving our B&B in Jesmond, we jumped on the metro and made our way to the start of our trip, namely Wallsend. Once off, we went down to the old Roman fort called Segudunum. There was one problem, it opened at 10:00 and as it was only 09:20, they would not let us in. There was only one thing that we could do, and that was to start walking.
Following an old railway bed, we passed through the old shipyard areas of Newcastle, all empty now. It's hard to believe that this place built the majority of the worlds ships once. As we walked, Geordies would stop and talk to us. So different to London. Sometimes I wonder, just looking at people could get you stabbed !!! As the city centre came into view, we copped our first view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge copy !!! For years I've wanted to see it, and finally here we were.
Out through the otherside, we followed the Tyne. In the distance we could see the Angel of the North, but we weren't headed that way. Maybe another time. After the city, we went through industrial estates, then into suburbia. Nothing spectacular, but still it was fun. After passing a disused railway station, we came to a huge park. Up on the right, we could see our destination. Actually it was up a massive hill, and trust me, my legs were not looking forward to this. And then it happened, up we went !!!
Now according to our book, there was a shortcut to the farm we were staying at, so we attempted it. Wasn't long before we were lost in a small forest !!! My knees were screaming at me, but we kept going. Eventually a road came up, and we figured that this was near our place. After walking the wrong way, a local turned us around and we found our way there. once in the room, Paula the owner, made us a cup of tea as we rested. Whilst drinking, we met a couple of guys who were going the other way. They told us what to expect, and it did/didn't sound fun !!!
Later on, we went to dinner at the local pub, but just before we got there, we saw our first bit of wall. Trust me it was exciting. We took the obligatory snaps before we had dinner. Now as this the North, the dinner was huge and cheap, just what we needed.
So that was day one. My knees hate me, but it can only get better, well that's what I am telling myself !!!
