Flag of Indonesia  , Bali,
Sunday, May 25, 2008

In April last year, Lucy and myself, through our mate Davey went diving. It was a great trip, and Dave said to us, in two years time, we shall do another.

The months passed, and in November the phone rang. It's Dave here, get your bags packed and ticket booked as we are going diving in May in Indonesia !!! Being one who likes to collect countries, we didn't say no. The seeds were sewn, a dive a trip was planned, now all we had to do was count down the months.

The Plan

Fly to Singapore, wait 95 minutes, jump on another plane, arrive in Bali, head up to Ubud, meet Dave back at the airport, and then fly to our yacht.

The Flight

We flew with Singapore Air, and as it was a long haul flight, they gave us the new A380. This is the big bastard, the one that holds the most passengers in the world !!! Everyone was onboard, but the plane didn't move. We sat, messages kept coming through saying we were going to leave soon, and after an hour, we did. No reason as to why we were late. I think it had to do with the plane being so big that they had to clear everything off of the runway !!!

After a twelve hour flight, we landed. Trust me, when you're down the back of a plane with 400 other plebs in front of you, it takes a while before you get off. We had 15 minutes to get to the next flight. We just made it. A couple of hours later, we landed in Bali.

Visas bought, after getting stamped in, Lucy was waiting for me, backpack on. Mine wasn't there. I had feelings straight away that it wasn't going to turn up, and after watching all the bags come out, it was not there. Over to the complaints section, they took my details and gave me 300,000 Rupiah. There was nothing much more we could do. Ubud was gone, so we had to go to Kuta. Fucking Kuta, a place I've never wanted to go to. To many Aussies for my liking !!!

Kuta

A hotel was found, so we hit the streets, as I had to fit myself out with a new wardrobe. Trust me, 300,000 Rupiah doesn't go far, and to make things worse, I lost my sunnies !!! I was not enjoying myself, so I sat back and cracked a couple of Bintangs to console myself. And Kuta, it just seemed like another Phuket or Paphos or Agia Napa or, or, or some other place which really isn't my cup of tea !!!

At around 22:30, a plane flew overhead. I looked at Lucy and said, that's the last Singapore Air flight coming in, I wonder if my bag will be on it?

An hour later, the phone rang and a conversation was had

Me - Hello
Reception - Is that Mr David
Me - Yes
Reception - This is reception, we have your bag
Me - You do !!!!!
Reception - Yes

It was like christmas, I was so excited, I ripped it open, and it was all there. My bag, the one that has been everywhere, including a trip to Singapore on its own. There was only one thing we could do, have more Bintang !!!

And Finally

Good things become bad, and bad becomes good. Kuta was kind of ok I suppose, but now my life is back on track, so tomorrow, our proper trip begins as we are going to go to Ubud

I am so glad you got your backpack back. It is the worst ever when they lose luggage or it is delayed! Have a great trip!

Lucky!
Man you have all the luck in the planet!! My family once had to wait 5 days to recover their bags. Glad to see you made it. Both of you look good :)

Selamat siang!
Hope you guys are having fun in Bali. Ubud was gorgeous when I went. Don't go near those monkeys with any plastic bags or there will be hell to pay. And hope you have more interesting diving than what was off one of the islands when I was there back in 2004.

Rough Seas?
How rough have you found the seas around Komodo/Rinca whilst diving? From the reports on TV the other day about people getting stranded on an island, being forced to eat raw shellfish, you've probably got some stories to tell!!
