The Screaming Jets once sang
There's nothing like the feeling at the boarding gate
Not sure I'll ever get used to that one
Now I see her, now she's gone
Then I turn and go away
Then I start counting down the days
Lucy had left me for a visit to Australia, but I wasn't counting the days until I saw her again, I was counting the days until I went to Cyprus, and as I now have no job, what care in the world do I have !!!
After the initial flight, I was given my aluminuim can that is to be my trusty steed for the week. It was gutless, but I was in no rush. For an EU country, amazingly, GPS does not work here, so I had to drive blind. I did have a kind of a map, but it didn't help, luckily, driving with one dodgy arm/hand, reading a map and thankfully, driving on the left hand side of the road, I found the signs to Limassol or Lemesos as the Cypriots would call it.
As I got closer, Limassol disappeared !!! Taking the next turn off, I found some signs that said city centre. I didn't see anything that said Limassol, were they trying to hide it !!! Luckily, my inbuilt navigation system found the right street, and my dodgy hotel came into view. I was met by a guy who can only be described as looking like Kenny Roger's dad !!! Then another guy came in and he was Kenny Rogers. He was even a Seppoe !!! He ran the place, gave me the lowdowns, showed me the room, then I went out walking.
The old town is quite small. The churches are your typival Greek Orthodox wedding cake style, and I even found a Mosque. The Ottomans had a big presence here, so I was looking forward to getting re-aquainted with Islam. It's a pity the door was locked as I couldn't see inside. There was also an old Byzantine fort which was now a museum. You are not allowed to take photos inside, and as there tourists around, the guard followed me everywhere. I couldn't even throw him off the roof as it was locked up. When I asked why, I was told that a granny had gone up there and jumped, so now it was closed !!!
By the time I had finished just wandering around, I discovered that this place had sold out big time. There was a Starbucks !!! So I hit up a dinner place in whoresville. It was amazing, there were topless shows being advertised. Touts were trying to drag me in. As Lucy wasn't around, I was tempted, but I thought as it was my first day here, I better not !!!
So that was day 1. Nothing to spectacular, but it can only improve. Tomorrow I'm off to Nicosia, a divided city, and I am looking forward to that.
