Built on a hill, a huge hill in fact, and once the car was parked, we walked. The old city is good. It was hard to remember it all as my brain cells are dieing, but little things stood out. The piazza, Duomo, lanes going up/down. We walked around being tourists. It was fun and amazingly, I never tire of being a tourist. As it was Sunday, we were not allowed in the churches !!! That was ok as Perugia is a place that just begs to be explored, so we did it. Actually, as far as cities go, if you need to lose a few kilos, this is a great place. Sometimes I think, are the Italians very smart, because if they were would they not have built funiculars like Lisbon ??? And with that thought, we left the place and headed in a new direction.
Every year in July and August, the locals celebrate i'l Palio. Now I love the Oktoberfest, but this festival is amazing. A local horse race around a piazza, 30000 people jammed inside the Piazza, and back in 98, we had a barrier spot. It was amazing.
Again we parked up and hit the streets. We had a look at the Duomo. It was all duomoey looking. Actually it use to be bigger, but now part of it is used to park cars !!! As we walked, we went through various Contradas. The Snail, the Tortoise, the Fish, the Rhino before we arrived in the Piazza del Campo Seeing the piazza was weird. Last time we were here there were jockeys, horses, barriers, clay and shitloads of people, and now it was a normal Italian town on any old day. It wasn't right. This is I'll Palio town. Where the people with the flag poles? I walked a lap of the track pretending to hear the thunder from that day, but there was nothing so I looked around, taking it in. Realistically, the piazza is great, and after seeing it with Zonth, it makes me want to come back and do it all again, but this time not be a tight fucker, but to buy a seat in a grandstand, but that's the future, and we never know what will happen. I did know one thing, and that was the shitter was waiting for us, to take us back to where we came from.
Back In Florence
We walked through the Porta Romana, found a café, ate and drank somemore red wine. Then it was over, so we paid and walked out. We said our goodbyes, and as we walked away, I laughed. Lucy asked me why, and I told her that here we were in Florence, with a guy I grew up with, and we were walking away in different directions. It was a weird feeling.
Fuck it was good seeing Zonth, catching up and going back to these two cities and drinking loads of coffee but, and there always is a but. When it comes to driving, the Italians are fucked. They drift into your lane, they flash you to get out of the way, even when there is a slow car in front, but the worse is, they don't know how to merge when entering expressways. For a country that produces some of the most exotic cars and bikes in the world, their driving skills have a lot to answer for !!!
