As the Golf had proven itself after its little spat in Surrey, we decided that as summer had finally arrived in England, we would head on back to West Sussex and see the stuff that we had not seen before. So we jumped in and headed South, off to see more Roman mosaics, and a Roman road or two

Fishbourne Palace

Over the years, I have driven around the South of England, and I have seen the signs for this palace, but as I keep telling you all, it's the Jew in me that has stopped me from entering because I would have had to put my hand in my pocket, but since I've been in hospital, I've had a new outlook on life, so off we went, to the little village of Fishbourne. I dug deep into my pockets, paid and entered. Down below was a huge area of mosaics. Much larger than Bignor Roman Villa, more in the size of Casa Mitreo. There was a lot missing from the majority of them, but there was one extra special one, it had the central winged character riding a dolphin. It was very impressive. There was also the remains of a Medusa head which was a newer mosaic built on top of an older one. Once the palace had been abandoned, it was turned into a sort of graveyard. Digging started, a few bodies were found, and one was left, for the show and tell feature, so being the tourists that we are, we took the photos. We had a quick look round the gardens, took some more photos, then moved on.

Chichester

If it rhymes with Ester, there is a good chance that it's going to be a Roman town, and trust me, England has loads of them !!! And as Chichester was around the corner, we decided to have a look.

Basically, there are two main roads, which are dead straight and aptly named, North, South, East and West. I know that is four, but they all meet at a central clock tower, and the name change takes place there. As we walked, there were numerous signs stating that a Quaker did this or that, then I saw one saying James Hack had done something. Now I work with a James Hack, and he is always dressed in black. Maybe he is hiding a little secret from me !!! There was also a Cathedral, which was quite nice, so we had a quick look inside, before we exited and did a wall walk as this is a walled town. Thet were ok, nothing like some of the ones we had seen recently, but beggars can't be choosers, so we followed them around until we had finished the circuit.

And our day was now over, all we had left was the drive back to Putney, which thankfully, the Golf made it back this time under it's own steam !!!
