Well, where do I begin.
I have always thought that chain mails about stopping violence are a waste of time, as they never achieve anything. So, this is not about a chain or trying to achieve anything, just the facts. Plain and simple
We wanted to go to Mostar for ages, so we bought a ticket from Kotor, and away we went. The reason why we wanted to go, was because there was a bridge, that was really old, but the Bosnian Croats/Croat army, had blown it up,including the whole of the old town, then it had been rebuilt, and we felt that we had to see this.
As we were nearing Mostar, we noticed that a lot of buildings had damage from the war. As we drove into town, I was sickened by what I was seeing. We have been to Beirut and I have been to Cambodia, but they were nothing in comparison. Row upon row of buildings, that would have been quite nice once, were just shattered remains. There were signs stating that you should not enter or park near these. We kept on driving, and I was thinking to myself, I should not be here, but the tourist dollar was needed for the people, so I was stuck between a rock and a hard place. I really felt like getting on a bus and leaving straight away, but where was I to go to at this time of the evening. So I settled for a room, walked around the town taking a few photos and settled for the night.
Next morning, the lady whose place we were staying in, told us her house had been destroyed and her husband had been killed. She had nothing, but was rebuilding rooms. She had one, then built another, and rented out the first, and now she has two rentable rooms, and this is her only form of income. We were happy to pay her. We packed up and walked around the town. We found a mosque, and a guy there, told us that 27 grenades were thrown at the bridge, as it was the last bridge standing, before a tank brought it down. The Bosnian Croats were ethnic cleansing the Muslims. It really is horrific. I was so disgusted by all of this, that I had to leave. So we did.
Personally, I would not recommend someone to go there, but the people do need the money, so for the sake of the people, if you do get a chance, GO
