The wonders of Bagan

I have always followed the letter to the law, never eat the food at any place that buses stop at.
We could not find any food for the 8 hour boat ride to Bagan. So we starved. I had a bad fever and I was grumpy because I was hungry. Eventually, I couldn't hold out any longer, I bought some food on the boat. Was this a mistake, only time would tell. The boat pulled into the dock, we paid our US$10 entrance fee, and found a hotel. We were surrounded by Payas. We climbed one to watch the sun go down. Everywhere you looked, they were there. In the morning, I awoke, Lucy wasn't feeling well, as a matter of fact, neither was I. This was more than a fever, there was a rumbling followed by short sharp stabbing pains in our stomachs, then we were running/fighting to get to the toilet first, oh fuck it, this was diarrhea!!!!! For the first time in our lives, we had been struck down. I managed some breakfast in-between visits to the toilet, then we hopped onto some pushies and rode into town to find some tablets. There were no doctors so we went to a shop to explain our predicament. I told them I wanted something to block me up, they offered me toilet paper. They could not speak English, I gesticulated with my hands. They, after much laughter, sold me something. They kind of worked. We rode for 4 days doing around 20 klms a day. From small to big, they were magnificent. We went to the touristy one, to watch the sun go down but it was to crowded, so, every morning and evening, we watched it from our own personal one. Everywhere you looked, they were there. I have never seen so many temples in one complex. Over 4000 of them they say, I suppose the hardest thing to get over was the fact that they were building new ones in the Bagan style. We saw and climbed upon loads and we even managed to see Herbie the Love bug. Obviously, this is where he had retired to after his movie career was over !!!!!. They were easily the equal of Angkor. Different styles to other temples in SEA, but equally impressive. Lucy was mightily impressed, and after 5 days of being in Bagan, our diarrhea had gone, Lucy was back on solid food, so we caught a bus and headed over to Inle Lake.
One last word though, there were package tours everywhere in Bagan, but you could still get out to some and see no one, not even a tout trying to push his goods onto you. So before this place gets over run with coaches, go while you still can
