Ryanair were now flying to an airport that was classified as Dusseldorf. It was over 90 Klm's away, so, I suppose it was Dusseldorf airport, and, as the flights were only 0.01p each way, how could we resist, so, we flew to Dusseldorf.
We had been here before, well, briefly that is, and as we only had a quick look around then, we decided that a weekend was the only way to go. It was a bit of a tactical error actually. We had booked loads of flights with Ryanair and it was World Cup of Rugby, and we were going to be away for most of it. There was only one real thing to do. Do a bit of sightseeing, well, there really is not much here, and then hit the beers. The beer to drink here is Uerige beer. Where it is sold, they say that it is the longest bar in Germany. Where ever you sit/stand, waiters walk around with trays of beers, and once you have that first one in your hand, as soon as you have a third left in the glass, another on appears. Now this is service. It was cheap as well. Amazingly, what was not traditional though, the toilets were free !!!!! Quite a few beers later, we stumbled away, found an Irish bar, got the scores and looked for food. The restaurants were not as fast at taking your order, or, giving you a menu !!! So we found a classy little number that was called Pork Pork. We did have some frites on the side with my knuckle of pork. It was good pork. The Germans really know and like their pork. We now needed to wash this food down with an after dinner drink, and when in Dusseldorf, there is only one. Killipitsch. It's a liqueur, kind of like Jaegermeister, and it tastes like cough medicine. There is only one place that serves it, and it's a little teeny bar not too far from the Alt bier house. You can order from outside the place, through a window that opens to the bar, or you can go inside, where there's a small curved bar, a few tables, and a small balcony looking over the whole scene. It's quite a place, and quite an aperitif. All the locals hit it, and were impressed that a dodgy Aussie and whatever Lucy is, were getting amongst it. Then I died
The following morning, we had a walk around the harbour, there were some interesting buildings here, typical out there German architecture. You only ever see stuff like this in Germany. There was not much more to do, so we went back for more Alt beer to pass the time away. Eventually, the bus arrived and took us back to the airport. The problems started. The airport control, would not let the plane land. It landed. We had to run to get on the plane. We were buckled in. The engines started, we started to move, a bus and a fire engine blocked our way. Why ??? Well, we had left 30 seconds late because the controllers had not let the plane land and no plane was allowed to leave after 22:30 as we could wake the neighbours !!!!! We were in the middle of bloody nowheresville !!!! After much bribing, we were eventually allowed to leave !!! Great weekend, but not a happy ending
