As the world's longest day one of any holiday ever drags on, with a further 8 hour flight and then a whole afternoon in Osaka still to come, we find ourselves in Helsinki where, for the past six hours, it's felt like a marginally slow six episodes of Keifer Sutherland comedy 24.  Traipsing from town hall, to docks, to cathedral, to American themed diner, we've seen pretty much the entire right hand side of Helsinki.  Although I guess that depends which way you're facing.

We decided to take the longer stopover in order to get a look at Finland and, in all fairness, it has been pretty nice here.  For a start we got free smoothies within seconds of arriving and the weather was pretty good for the whole, despite it starting out crappy.

One of the Cathedrals we saw - Uspenski - was absolutely amazing and Kirill helped a baby down the stairs, a bit like that bit in Battleship Potemkin, but with less dead sailors.

As the weather started to turn bad again and I got sick of Kirill taking macro shots of knots from three millimetres away, we set off to find somewhere to rest (get drunk) before the next leg.  Luckily, we were miraculously saved from the impending rain storm by the one site that every Englishman abroad hopes and prays for - a Newcastle Brown Ale sign.  And so we wound down the last couple of hours with some dodgy European beer, Amitīs timelapse shutter and some toilets that looked like Hannibal Lector's cell in Silence of the Lambs.  Pictures hopefully to follow.

All in all, good stuff so far.  Even the flight didn't suck, apart from the wierd landing music that sounded like the band playing as the Titanic went down.  It's still all preamble though and the good stuff starts while you're all in bed.

My overall thoughts of Helsinki?  I'm hungry.
