4 hour drive to Ngorongoro Crater Lodge
Entry 5 of 12 | show all | print this entry |
the Ngorongoro crater is an expansive, 220 sq. mile-wide hole that was left when an ancient volcano imploded millions of years ago. . . Our lodge sat perched on the edge, overlooking what has since become an edenic paradise, filled with almost every kind of safari animal, and many of them stay all year because there is always water in the crater. We saw Wildebeest, Zebra, Ostritches, Hartebeest, Jackals, Hippos, Baboons, Lions, Elephants, a Rhino or 2, and (perhaps) even a Cheetah in the distance, enjoying it's kill. The Lodge itself was an excercise in true decadance- but amazingly, not useless or wasted like some hotels we've visited. It was styled to blend an old-world, classical European style with the more natural, rustic, native look of Africa- beautifully combined with a creative decorative flair. The room Chris and I shared was beautiful: including a large stone fireplace, huge open bathroom with freestanding tub, a king bed below a chandalier, and 2 balconies overlooking the vast crater, right beneath your feet.
