We had another adventure with the car leaving Noosa and heading towards our 3rd Helpx location in between Gympie and Kilkivan (hopefully this would be better than the last). The directions they gave us were great and we made it without too much trouble.
Anne-Marie and Joe were our hosts and it was probably one of my favorite periods on my Australia trip so far. Every morning we had fresh fruit for breakfast and all other meals were amazing as well. I ate at least 10 mangoes while I was there and they are now my favourite fruit. Max and I each had our own beds in a loft. The house was bloody brillant.
Anne-Marie runs a kangaroo and wallabee sanctuary out of her house and in the backyard. We got to feed baby kangaroos bottles of milk and take care of little wallabees
Work was really hard however. We started early to avoid the heat, woke up at 5:40 am each morning and were ready by 6. We were helping to build a vegie garden which required a ton of dirt moving and post digging. By 10am one morning I had drank 3 liters of water and was still dehydrated because of all the sweat I was losing. Max rang out his shirt and at least half a liter dripped out. So that was pretty horrible, but overall it was good. They had a bigscreen TV so we got to watch the Superbowl (what a game). Played with some kangaroos and wallabees (they are much better looking). Ate mass amounts of food. Slept well.
The first night after work we went into town with Anne-Marie to a frog seminar and frog hunt. It turned out being quite lame but they order pizza to which I ate 2 myself. The next day we went to a gold mine and panned for gold for 4 and a half hours. It was hard work but I managed to find a few little nuggets valued at $5-6. So, I made about $1.2 an hour. Not bad. It was a fun experience though.
While we were there it rained a ton. I'd guess about 10 inches in 4 days. We had to leave a few hours early to avoid the creek from overflowing. It did anyway and we had to drive through about 2 feet of fast flowing water as we left the place which was a little scary. We made it out though.
