We arrived at about 6:30 a.m. on January 5th. With the time change you can add 7 hours and subtract a day, so it would have been 1:30 pm on January 4th back in the states. It worked out well becuase that's about the time I usually wake up so I didn't feel any jetlag at all. We got all our luggage and took a free shuttle bus to the Jolly Swagman Backpacker Hostel we were staying at. It's a pretty decent place. Rooms are basic, 4 bunk beds with shared bathrooms, no A/C but a fan did the trick. There is also a kitchen and a TV room.
We walked all around Sydney today, stupid of me to wear sandles as I quickly developed a blister on my foot. It rained and sprinkled for the entire day but I still managed to get sun burnt. We saw the Sydney Opera House, Botanic Gardens, Chinatown, Harbour Bridge, and probably a few other things I've forgot. At night we went to a few bars and had a few drinks. It was fun but everything here is so expensive! Sydney is supposedly the 3rd most expensive city in the world. $5 loaf of bread, 80 cents each for a banana, $6 for a glass of beer.
Up to this point I haven't really noticed any major differences between Australia and the United States other than accents, driving patterns, and prices.
