Today is the next to last full day of our stay in Venice. I asked DH this morning if someone were to ask him how much time to allot to stay in Venice, what would he say? His answer was "Two days, or two weeks." As I think about our visit, I can understand his answer... you can see the major tourist attractions in 2 days, or you can get that out of the way and spend 2 weeks just meandering around like we have, never knowing what vista will appear when you turn the corner out of an alley. After having been here almost a week, we are starting to gain confidence in our ability to assimilate ourselves into the Venetian way (although we would never be mistaken for anything other than the American tourists that we are!). For the most part, the Italians here just ignore anybody who isn't Italian, but every day we meet one or two who are the exception to the rule, and we feel like we have made a new friend. The waiter who actually took the time to recommend dishes and wine, always with a warm smile - the little girl with her basket behind me at the grocery checkout who so proudly showed me her mother's shopping list and store credit card - the clerk at the glass shop on Murano who encouraged us to handle the merchandise - the owners of the internet café where we have been sending these blogs on their way. These are the faces that will remain in our memories...
And now, it's time for me to get ready for our next evening out. DH said something about how it was time for the gondoliers to be hanging around the bridges, wooing customers. Wonder what he could have in mind???
Ciao!
