Finally! A nice place, a nice hotel, and nice people again. We arrived later in the afternoon than anticipated (had to wait longer than expected for a bus in Bago - apparently buying a ticket doesn't always mean anything). Still, we found a great hotel which was such a bonus after the place in Bago.

We went to bed early the first night as we needed to be up and raring to go for our trip up the hill the next morning. Our truck was loaded (and overloaded) with people and we headed out for a 45 minute ride part way up to the Golden Rock. The rest of the way (sadly for me) was a really rather steep walk up....and up....and up! We did however, make it in the end.

The Golden Rock itself was quite the thing. It really does balance rather precariously on the edge. Women aren't allowed to approach the rock itself, but Malcolm got to do another bit of gold-leafing.

I feel a little like we miss out on some of the experience though when we visit all these really rather amazing Buddhist sights. Because we can't speak the language, and we aren't that familiar with the Buddhist rituals, we only really understand a small amount of what's going on. Still, what we do get is always interesting.

Definitely Kyaikto was a nice way to round out our trip to Myanmar, and cheer us up again after a few hard going days. Back to Yangon for a bit of shopping before we head back to Thailand.

Love,
K&M

hi guys just looked at all your pics they really are amazing, i didn't know places like this existed, - you know the way in Britain you see pics of certain monuments etc. which are famous - but nothing like the temples which are in your pictures - makes me think there are so many hidden wonders of the world!!!
keep travelling

So exciting to read about and see where you've been recently. How on earth does the Golden Rock stay in place? It may just be possible for you to be over- templed, and over-goldened soon but I can't get enough of your stories and pictures. Hope you are now recovering and getting some rest soon.
Much love
Mumsey

I'm glad to see you have surfaced again. The pictures are fantastic and man I can tell it is really HOT! I hope a few days reclining on the beach in South Thailand will be a nice change from these past few weeks. We are having a few days of nice sunny weather and the snow is melting at a great rate- not all gone yet and maybe a new suppy to come this weekend. M & M are having a good time in Italy.... show all
