Stranded!
Entry 51 of 79 | show all | print this entry |
Ah...there's nothing like someone telling you the times the ferry runs, and then someone else tells you different times, and then someone else tells you different times, etc. etc. etc. (If any travelers happen to be reading this - there is definitely NO boat later than 2pm running from Pakokku to Bagan!) Needless to say, we took the bus from Monywa to Pakokku to have plenty of time to catch the 4pm boat onwards to Bagan, only to find out that there was no such boat. Our options now were to hire the whole boat ($35US) or spend the night. Obviously being the cheap-o's that we are we opted to stay the night.
Okay, all we need now is a guesthouse! We hopped in a horsecart from the "ferry pier" (which actually is a dirt path down the bank to the river) and off we went. We went to a couple of guesthouses but they can't take foreigners; then we went to a government hotel - which we didn't want to stay in; then we finally ended up in a little family run guesthouse which could have us. The couple that ran the place were incredibly friendly, but honestly the place was an absolute dump. To illustrate - they hadn't had electricity in over a week, and in order to flush the toilet you needed the water pump to be working which, of course, runs on electricity. So, our toilet was rather full of a week's worth of.....unpleasantnesses.....from other people. Did I also mention that its incredibly hot here? Are you getting the picture (and smell?!?!)
Never mind. Its all part of the travelling spirit! We managed to get a bit of sleep although its incredibly hot and really, really dusty in Pakokku (I think I used my asthma inhaler about seven times through the night) and headed out on the 5:30am boat downriver to Bagan.
More on that in the next episode! Love, K & M
