Prison for a day....well more like an hour

Hello All -
We are still in Chiang Mai at the moment. We did go this afternoon to have our "prison massages" and they were fantastic! For $5 each we got a full body one hour Thai massage - I must admit I might have a few sore muscles tomorrow, but today I feel superb. Thai massage involves lots of stretches and working on pressure points - ouch!
On Saturday we did go to see a "Long Neck" Karen tribe - these people are refugees from Myanmar that now live in eco-villages here in Thailand, and basically have to live off of the tourist dollars they receive as they are not officially recognized as Thai citizens. I must admit, I felt a bit intrusive going into the village and taking heaps of pictures willy-nilly (as that's something that we were not able to do while visiting ethnic villages in Laos) but as you end up paying a huge sum to visit these eco-villages, taking all the pics you want is part of the deal. Still, it felt a bit funny sticking my camera in everyone's face - even though we did always ask permission first. All in all, though, I guess they are living a better life here?
Last night we got to go to the largest handicraft street market I have ever seen. On Sunday evenings from 4-12pm the whole of one of the main streets here in Chiang Mai gets turned over to this huge market - there are even stalls set up in the temple courtyards. There was absolutely everything you could imagine and more - thankfully (says Malcolm) we have no room in our backpacks for all the do-dads I could've bought!
Otherwise, our time in Chiang Mai has seen us just tootling about and taking it easy. Malcolm is still not feeling 100%, so I've been using him as my excuse to not do very much for a few days. Tomorrow morning we are off further north to a small place called Pai - a little town to just relax and enjoy life in for a few more days!
We head back to Bangkok on Saturday as we have a flight first thing Sunday morning for Rangoon. We will write more before we go though.
All our love, K & M

Amazing Costumes (reply) Mar 10, 2008 08:51 EST by goodwill
The colours are fantastic in these costumes. I'm glad we don't feel we have to wear those necklaces. We didn't really get the promised weekend storm but other parts of Eastern Canada got hammered and it is now doing its thing in Wales, Cornwall & Devon. You just have to love the internet! We spent last evening with the Steads & Millars. The girls are growing up fast. No DVDs yet. I't still early M... show all
