Flew from Sydney to Melbourne and from there to Bangkok. I was able to get a row all to myself so was able to lay down and sleep. Arrived in Bangkok around 6am and had some time to wait around for my flight to Koh Samui. Got into Koh Samui about 11am and checked in at hotel. I had a nice bungalow right by the beach. I wandered the beach and town a bit. I met up with my brother and his wife at their hotel about 4pm. We went to a spot they knew about up on a hill with good views over the bay for dinner.
Next day we rented scooters and went around the island. Saw Big Buddha, the town of Nathon, Namuang Waterfall and a "monkey work coconut" show. On the ride back, I crashed around a corner in loose gravel and scraped up my arm and hand. Went back to my hotel to clean it and I almost passed out while my brother was getting the pebbles out. Just went out shopping in the evening.
Went kayaking and snorkeling. I was with the "guide" and he was in back (steering). He informed me it was his first time kayaking (oh sh*t). At one of the beaches as we were coming in, he kept trying to turn us parallel to the waves and I kept shouting to keep us perpendicular. Ya, we flipped...by some sharp rocks. Lost some of his equipment.
The next day had lunch with my brother and wife before catching the flight to Bangkok.
Caught a taxi from the airport to my hotel. The hotel was really, really nice (5 star). I got a good deal online and had to double-check at the front desk if my rate was correct. I went out wandering the streets that night. Lots of people out, a couple elephants.
My map made it look like it wasn't too far from my hotel to the river. It was a long, long ways. All the car pollution didn't help. I went around to all the temples and Khao San Road. There was a free hotel shuttle to the Phatphong area so I took that. I was the only one. I wandered around the night market then took the Skytrain to Siam Sq. Most everything closed though.
Went out to Chatuchak Market for shopping. HUGE market with all kinds of stuff. Stopped by Khao San Rd after that for more shopping. Got a massage. Took the water taxi to Wat Arun then back to hotel.
The next day was waking up early for flight to Taiwan.
