The sun came out as I moved into Umbria. I took a bus from Siena to Assisi and wandered all around the hilly town with my big pack on (oy!). St Francis' cathedral is there. The town also has an old Roman wall and Greek pillars. Very touristy, but cool little spot. From there I bussed to Perugia. They have outdoor escalators to take you from the bus station up into the center of town. I'd say that makes people kind of lazy, but I sure liked not having to hike up the big hill. The hostel I was at had a terrace with a great view of town...only no one was hanging out there. I couldn't figure out why.

view from Perugia hostel

From Perugia I took a train into Rome and found a hostel in the Vatican City area. My first day there I wandered to all the well-known sites - St Peter's Square, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Colosseum, etc... Every place was overrun with tourists. You couldn't even get close to the fountain w/o pushing people out of the way. I guess it being the weekend didn't help. I went back out at night to see the stuff lit up, and it was still very crowded.

Trevi Fountain

I started off Sunday morning with mass in St Peter's Square with the Pope (you know, the usual). I strolled along the river and went off to see the Colosseum again (better lighting for picture). That evening I went with several people from the hostel to a free concert at Circo Massimo called "We Are The Future" put on by Quincy Jones. There were quite a few international artists I didn't know, but the lineup did include Santana, Alicia Keys, Andrea Bocelli and a few others I had heard of. For free, I'll watch most anything. I didn't get to see a lot of Rome and wasn't really planning to. This was just kind of a sample before coming back.

Now it's off to Naples...
