Carnival in Venice has definitely been my favorite trip so far, even though it started out terribly. Susie, Jen and I stayed in a bed and breakfast sort of place outside of Venice in Mestre. The guy picked us up from the bus station and i swear it was a scene from hostel and i thought we were going to be tortured to death. then we met his wife who is a sweetheart and i felt better.
What i had heard about carnival is that it is a mix of mardi gras and halloween. so when we arrived on friday i was expecting craziness. however when we got there there were not as many people as i thought there were going to be and we thought it was kinda lame. so our solution? drink lots and lots of wine on the streets of venice. great idea until around 7 when 2 of my friends get arrested for pouring wine on a police boat. not good, so Jen and i went runnign around venice trying to find the police station and getting terribly lost. then when i tried to get out money, my atm card got eaten by the machine 3 of us

. needless to say, it was nto a good night and the next day the 3 of us did not really want to be in venice. instead we went to murano, which is an island off of venice where the best glass in the world is blown. we saw a glass blowing demonstration (he brew a horse in less then a minute and it prob got sold for 50 euro in the gift store) and then went to a really nice lunch. after that at around 4 we were ready again for venice. when we got there we were shocked. there were hundreds of thousands of people there. and they were all dressed up. when i say that all the crazy people in the world must have been there, im not joking. there were 2 groups of about 40 people each, all dressed up as clowns. people were in ballroom gowns with carnival masks. i saw guys dressed as cows, chickens, dogs, batman and chuck norris. what did we do? drink more wine. I had the most unbelievable time in Venice that day. I did the chicken dance with a group of chickens. i also fed pigeons and grossly had them land on me. met some really cool, extremely intoxicated people. Ive never seen that many drunk people partying in one place. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity. cons of venice, if you dont go with a significant other or dont go during carnival, i can see hwo it can get really boring. its also very expensive to travel around and confusing to walk around if u try to not take the boats. but its beautiful. I would love to go back!
