Where I stayed
The Watchman Campground
On the sidewalk in front of his hotel...I beat him to Zion by a few minutes. While Mark got settled, I went next door and ordered beer and pizza. You can never go wrong with beer and pizza for a first date. It was all very easy and comfortable. Conversation flowed endlessly, as did the laughs.
The next day
I got up early, yes me, and walked into town to meet Mark. He wanted to take some photos of the fall colors in the morning light...that was the real reason for his visit to Zion...;0) That was fun. There was a whole troop of photographers tripping over each other to take the same photograph. Zion is a mecca for photographers. It's hard to get an original photo, as it has been captured and recaptured from every possible angle, and in every possible lighting condition...but, that has never stopped the trigger happy before...we just can't help ourselves. By mid-afternoon, Mark was getting thirsty...a man after my own heart. Our beer palace was closed until 4pm (what's up with that???), so, instead of driving to the next place that was "1 mile" down the road, I suggested we walk. It was hot and sunny, and Roxi had been couped up in the vehicle most of the morning. About 45 minutes to an hour into our journey, this infamous beer refuge had yet to appear on the horizon. Here we are in a beautiful National park, and we're spending all of our energy hiking along a paved road....hmmm, what's wrong with this picture. So saving face, as it was my idea to walk, we backtracked a couple of hundred yards and bought a six pack at a gas station and some chips, and then went and sat by the creek with our feet (which were extremely HOT) in the freezing cold water, and finally drank our beer. It was awesome, and I taught Mark how to open beer with a key...keep practising Mark ;0)
The day after that
Mark stood me up. I was up at 4:30am, he was gonna pick me up at 5am, and then we were gonna hike up in this trail in the dark so that he could take some photos of the sun rising...He showed up at 9:53 am...was I looking at the clock or what...You still owe me for that one, Mark. He blames it on the fact that I didn't answer my phone at 4:35am (cause I forgot it in his SUV), and he wanted to let me sleep...as he fell back to sleep...yup....sure.
Actually, he made it up to me by finding this great hike to go on that we could sneak Roxi on. It was about 12 miles round trip to this little spring...a pipe leaking water so hikers can refill -- not quite as picturesque as I'd envisioned, but the hike was.
We hiked out as the sun was setting.
It was a great visit, and a really wonderful first meeting. I'm sure we will do it again. I'm still hanging out in Zion. I spent yesterday morning sleeping in, and looking around the many galleries, and today, sleeping in, reading up on the next part of my trip, and blogging....I'm still trying to recover from my early, EARLY mornings, and late nights. Tomorrow, I plan to do some sketching or painting as a birthday present to myself. And, before I leave, I will hike to Angel's Landing...you need to check the virtual tour out on the Zion Park website.
