July 5 (Val) Our arrival here in Ljublijana last night was on time and we took a bus to the hostel without a hitch. Rob grabbed a quick snack (a philo dough type pizza thing) and drinks before boarding the bus. The hostel was like a university dorm building. Nice. Krystal caught the end of the Germany vs. Italy game in the common room.
Today we didn't rush out of the hostel because our train out to Munich was not until almost midnight. Rob was able to connect with wireless Internet and the girls slept in a bit. About noon we made our way back to the train station to book our train and rent bikes for the day. We could only get two there, so we got two bikes from another place up the road. Most of the city has great bike paths. It was a great way to get around this relatively small, clean and beautiful city. We went to the city center and had a great gelato ice cream. Then we were off to find lunch. We checked out several places before deciding on pizza. Wow was that a good decision. We got a family size, which was huge, that had eggplant, asparagus, mushrooms, green peppers and big globs of ricotta cheese that was like sour cream. We got a second medium size pizza that had four cheeses, one of which was gorgonzola (a great blue cheese), and the same globs of ricotta again but topped with fresh greens. That was our favorite. Krystal got gorgonzola ravioli which was wonderful. We were all stuffed and we even had to pack a piece and a half to eat later. This was really our first sit down to be waited on meal and it had outdoor seating. We all thoroughly enjoyed it.
Next stop was the market for raspberries and cherries. The market is a daily event and really cute with matching stalls. Then we were off to the castle on top of a hill and boy was it steep. We took the "back way" up and had to push the bikes because it was so steep, but we found a great bench with an awesome view to eat our raspberries. The castle was just OK, but it had a neat clock tower and a great restroom where we were able to fill our water bottles and wash our cherries! It was a fast trip down on the bikes, weeeeeeee. We happened upon a beautiful park that had a photographer's work displayed of serene places around the world. Another gelato ice cream was in order since it was cheap and delicious, then off to the grocery store to stock up for the train. We sat in another park for awhile and drank a bottle of Cockta. I thought it was like Faygo Rock and Rye, a dark cream soda. The Slovenians invented this soda when they could not get real Coke in here during Communists' time. I rather enjoyed it and they even had Cockta Light!
One last bike ride to explore a few streets we hadn't yet and then it was time to return the bikes. At the station, Krystal found a place to watch some of the soccer game between Portugal and France. I was rooting for Portugal, since they are "a small country." That was a quote from the train man that we have repeated several times at this trip. They only had two International trains out of the Lisbon station and the man's reason was "We are a small country." Unfortunately, they lost so now it is between Italy and France for the final (that was an update for all you living in the USA who don't keep up with the World Cup)!
