Were heading out this afternoon to Brizbane, i'll be pretty stoked to get out Surfers Paradise (a somewhat ironic name, because the surf sucked the entire time we were here) even though were heading to another large city centre.
New Years was fairly awesome, we all agreed to return our tickets for the club crawl when we found out it started at 5pm and only went until 10:30pm. there's this stupid rule that men have to wear shoes, pants, a collared shirt, and in my case long sleeves so my tatoo isnt showing, despite the 30 degree weather. it was probably a coilation between the local owners to torture the tourists for personal enjoyment, high fiving when we all walk in sweating buckets
anyways, we met up with the swedish guys from byron who came here for new years and the swiss girls we met in our hostel and went to 'waxeys' irish pub. it was whicked; good music, no lineup, no cover, and a really good crowd. at midnight we ran to the beach to see the fireworks with the other 500,000 people that had the same idea. it was a really good time, everyone was ridiculously smashed and had alot of fun
on the way home (after the bars closed at 5 am) it was already tomorrow and hot/sunny. there were people passed out on the streets everywhere: in bushes, park benches, over car hoods, even in fountains. always good for a laugh. getting a taxi was fairly ridiculous, but as would it be in any major city on new years. made an important phone call and was in bed by a respectable 6am, only to wake up at 9am because it was like an oven in our room by that time
all in all surfers paradise was okay, if you like flash and glammer, big city living, late night partying, and over crowded beaches. i wouldn't advise anyone to stay here for very long, especially when byron bay is only a short hour away. despite a terrible hostel and huge american like city we had an awesome. the saying really rings true while backpacking "its not the place your in that makes for a good experience, its the people you experience it with"
