On my way back to Yangon I stopped by in Bago, former capital city. Night bus trip from Mandalay was a bit tiring but arriving in Bago at 5am allowed me to have a little snooze for a couple of more hours.
I had for sightseeing only one day and since still a bit sleepy I did not fancy rent a bike, so I welcomed an offer from a moto driver to show me city around. There is a lot to see in Bago. Buddha and pagoda run seems never-ending, including four seated Buddhas monument, highest pagoda and biggest reclining Buddha in the country.
My moto driver was a well educated man doing this job due to lack of opportunities in his field (economics). I grabbed a beer with him in the evening while discussing political situation in Myanmar. Once tables around us got occupied, my new friend stopped the delicate topic afraid of being heard by government spies.
At the very beginning of my trip by talking to some people I got an impression of a boring town, but Bago was a nice surprise after all.
Golden Rock is an obvious next destination. Town of Kinpun is a base point for either a 4 hour hike or short truck ride up. I got there by pick-up early in the morning curled up and covering ears with my hands as until the sun comes up it is a bit chilly here. I got quickly accommodated and set off the hike. That was the best part of whole one day trip providing some nice vistas over surrounding plains and hills. Golden Rock itself did not impress me much. There were very little tourists but many locals as this stupa on a rock is one of the most revered places in the country.
